As Portland Realtors we come across them all the time, but what exactly is a bungalow? The term is used very loosely and with more and more frequency as the popularity of the home style grows. The origin of bungalow architecture is rooted in India, where bungalows where built to host travelers along trade routes. In the first half of the 20th century the American Arts and Crafts movement was gaining prominence, following the lead of the British the Arts and Crafts movement adopted the bungalow style and began infusing it with ornate Craftsman details. The undisputed architectural features one can use to identify bungalows in Portland, Oregon is a low pitched roof (often with one dormer facing the street), an open floor plan, and of course the expansive front porch. Irvington, Hawthorne and Nob Hill are all Portland neighborhoods where many historic bungalows can be found.
